This seminar, which will be taught remotely (both synchronously and asynchronously), will explore major works of modern Southern literature.  No background in Southern literature is necessary; the course will introduce you to the authors, themes, and developments that have shaped the modern Southern literary tradition.  Final reading selections have yet to be made but authors may include:  Kate Chopin, William Faulkner, Katherine Anne Porter, Zora Neale Hurston, Erskine Caldwell, Carson McCullers, Richard Wright, Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy, Cormac McCarthy, and Ernest Gaines.  Requirements:  participation in synchronous class discussions, two short papers, participation on discussion board, final exam.This course is open to all majors and appropriate for 1st year students.
