Notes:
We will look into how speech and language in second language is processed—as a whole, or as particular modules. Questions such as how are new speech categories formed? how lexicon is built? How does input play a role in learning new sounds and words. We will also examine how phonemes and morphemes are accessed in more complicated cognitive tasks such as word recognition, lexical decision, etc. Sentence processing will also be a topic in the course. The findings in the empirical study will be discussed in various theoretical frameworks of speech and language processing. Students will be expected to focus on both the theoretical ramifications of the readings and the practical applications of their conclusions to the second language classroom and produce a term paper that reflects the findings of the seminar.
