**Course fulfills Non-US History requirement.**This class explores feminisms from the eighteenth century to the present, focusing on three themes. The first part of the course begins with the Enlightenment and the development of ideas about rights and follows this “rights talk” through the thread of liberal feminism to the present. The second part of the course begins in the mid-nineteenth century with the origins of socialism and its rejection of rights as a tool of progress. We then follow the socialist feminist tradition to the present. Finally, in the last part of the course, we examine postcolonial and “Third-World” feminism by studying the rise and decline of European imperialism and the development of non-western critiques of western feminisms. The seminar introduces students to the many variations of feminism and explores the historical development of these approaches to women’s status and roles.
