Notes:

This seminar will examine the relationship of the soldier and the state since the American Revolution. The course will chart the development of principles governing duties of military service, access to military service, and entitlements earned through military service. Readings and discussions will also investigate the organization of the military, such as the changing mechanisms for selection of officers, and the extent of civilian oversight of military decisions. In addition to political and constitutional debate over these policies, the proseminar will analyze literary and artistic representations of military service that have shaped a cultural conception of martial citizenship. The course assumes no prior familiarity with the topic and has no prerequisites.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
