Notes:

Biofilms are attached bacteria that surround themselves with protective polymeric molecules. This provides them with unique capabilities such as cell-cell communication; enhanced gene-exchange and resistance to antibiotics, which are not often present in similar individual cells. The course is designed for biology, premed, chemistry and public health majors, and involves some formal lectures but will center on student/instructor discussions. Pwpt slides for each topic and a short article will be read prior to class and will form the basis of discussions.Biofilms are cooperative groups bacteria that drive most human infections, but also drive the (helpful) human microbiome. Biofilms exist in all environments on Earth; and are especially present in extreme conditions where other life forms cannot survive. Presently scientists think they may be how life might occur elsewhere. These topics will all be discussed. Students with a foundation in basic biology and chemistry are welcomed.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
