Many students plan on going to law school without an understanding of the legal system, the different types of careers in law, the nature of a legal education or what the practice of law really entails. Taught by a practicing attorney in a large law firm who is actively involved in the management of his firm and who formerly was an adjunct professor of legal writing, this class will provide students an overview of the legal system and the different areas of law in the United States , the legal education system and what to expect, how to think like a lawyer, possible careers in law, and certain business aspects of the practice of law. The course will also explore the ethical rules applicable to lawyers and the public’s perception of lawyers and the underlying reasons. This class is intended to provide practical, real world information to enable students to better determine whether they want to attend law school and have a career in law and, if so, to equip students to be better postured for success in law school.
