Ask a Question

Admissions staff are always available to answer your questions. Take a look at these  frequently asked questions first, then contact us if you need additional information.

Residency Requirements

We accept out-of-state applicants, and about 30 percent of each class hails from outside of South Carolina. If you are an out-of-state student, you will have the option to establish South Carolina state residency during your first year of medical school. In-state status will allow you to pay S.C. resident tuition rates for your second through fourth years.

All residency determinations are made by the Residency Office [INTERNAL LINK: ] at the University of South Carolina.

Currently, the USC School of Medicine Greenville is only able to accept applications from U.S. citizens and applicants who hold a permanent resident visa.

Admissions Requirements

We do not have a minimum GPA or MCAT score. However, the average GPA and MCAT scores for matriculating students are typically 3.7-3.75 and 509, respectively. The admissions committee reviews applicants holistically .

The admissions committee will consider your highest composite score, but we will look at scores from all your attempts, considering section scores and trends.

You are eligible to apply as long as you plan to take the remaining courses in the upcoming academic year, with completion prior to matriculation in July.

In some cases, we will accept credits from AP/IB, community college or online classes. In those instances, the admissions committee will look for evidence demonstrating your ability to successfully complete rigorous academic material, such as upper-level courses or in-person classes taken at four-year institutions. Learn more in the admission requirements section .

At this time, the admissions committee is unable to accept transfer applications into any year of our program.

Application Process

No, we recommend that you submit your AMCAS application as soon as possible. Please indicate the date of your future MCAT exam on your AMCAS application. The score will automatically populate in your AMCAS application once it is available.

You do not need to alert us of the new MCAT score. If you indicate in your AMCAS application that you plan to retake the MCAT then later cancel the test, please let us know so we can continue processing your application without the additional MCAT score.

Yes, you may make updates by using the application update form.

Yes. See step 3 on the application step by step page to learn more about the supplemental application

Early Decision Program deadlines are in August, and Regular Decision deadlines begin in November. Review our application timeline for more information about specific dates.

Due to the rolling admissions process, we strongly recommend submitting your application as early in the application cycle as possible. We receive a very large number of qualified applications for a relatively small number of interview slots.

If you have not heard anything from us, then your application is still being reviewed. We will contact you via email when your application status is updated (interview offered, rejected, need more information, etc). If you are concerned that there is a problem with your application or that something may be missing, please email us at admissions@greenvillemed.sc.edu.

Our applicant pool grows each year; we received about 4,000 applications for 110 positions for the class entering in 2023. We interview approximately 8 percent of the applicant pool each year.

The early decision program is most beneficial for applicants who both are 100 percent certain they want to attend the USC School of Medicine Greenville and have a competitive application. The program is binding; if you apply early decision, you will not be allowed to apply to other medical schools until later in the fall.

We require at least three letters of recommendation, with a maximum of five letters. If your undergraduate institution prepares a premedical advisory committee letter, we will accept that to fulfill the minimum letter requirements. Learn more about who we recommend to write letters of recommendation on the admission requirements section.
