Inclement Weather Policy for Clerkship and Post-Clerkship Students

  • Clinical Responsibilities: During times of inclement weather, your clinical responsibilities must be balanced by concerns for safety. The final decision about travel to inpatient and outpatient facilities should be made by you based on your assessment of current travel conditions.
  • Outpatient Assignments: When the outpatient clinic or community practice to which you are assigned is open and operational, you are expected to make every reasonable effort to be present during hours of operation, when it is safe to do so. If your outpatient assignment is closed, you are not required to submit an absence request.
  • Inpatient Assignments: Similarly, for inpatient clinical rotations, you should make every reasonable effort to be present as assigned, if travel conditions permit.
  • Communication If You Cannot Attend: If you determine that travel is unsafe and you will be absent due to hazardous weather conditions, please notify your clerkship coordinator and clinical team, and complete an Absence Request using the Smartsheet form, marking Hazardous Weather as the reason. All absences submitted for hazardous weather will be excused and do not require make up time.

Your safety is always our primary concern. Please use all necessary precautions.
