The Service-Learning Program at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville is committed to fostering meaningful community connections, promoting social equity, and driving positive social change. We strive to uphold the core pillars of Lifestyle Medicine—healthy living, physical activity, managing stress, healthy relationships, quality sleep, and avoiding harmful substance use—as we serve our community. Our mission is to support faculty, staff, students, and communities in integrating academic coursework with impactful community service, all while promoting a healthier, more sustainable way of life. We aim to enhance students' civic development by addressing campus- and community-identified needs, facilitating valuable connections, and creating a collaborative environment where students contribute to the health and well-being of their community. In doing so, they not only gain educational experiences linked to their coursework but also actively promote the values of healthy living.
Our vision is simple yet powerful: Students engage in service that directly aligns with their academic pursuits, while the community becomes an educational partner, receiving support for its vital work. Together, we strive for a harmonious blend of academic excellence, community impact, and the promotion of Lifestyle Medicine principles that improve the health and vitality of those we serve.
