Bio

Background: Between 1996 and 1999 while serving as the Staff Pediatric Cardiologist at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, I developed a series of satellite (outreach) cardiology clinics to serve the following areas: (1) Holloman AFB, NM; (2) Fort Huachuca, AZ; (3) Davis-Menthan AFB, AZ; and (4) Kirtland AFB, NM. As a faculty member of the San Antonio Military Pediatric Center (SAMPC) from 1999 to 2001, I conducted clinics at Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX; Darnall Army Community Hospital at Fort Hood, TX; William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX; RW Bliss Army Health Clinic at Fort Huachuca, AZ; and the 377th Medical Group at Kirtland AFB, NM. These clinics provided comprehensive cardiac care for the fetus, infant, child, adolescent, and young adult with congenital and acquired heart disease.

I have been involved with Graduate Medical Education (GME) since 1996. From 1993 to 1996 I served as the Pediatric Cardiologist at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and was responsible for training and supervising 12 pediatric housestaff in both general pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. At SAMPC, I participated in the training and education of 42 Pediatric Interns and Residents as well as Adult Cardiology Fellows and visiting medical students. I organized the pediatric cardiology elective/rotation, assembled a Pediatric Cardiology Syllabus and Manual, and personally supervised and evaluated each of the trainees. I also regularly gave lectures as part of the Residency Program curriculum, precepted in the pediatric clinic, served as pediatric ward attending 2 weeks each year, and staffed the pediatric ICU on a rotating basis.

As CME Director for the Department of Pediatrics, I was responsible for planning and conducting our monthly Pediatric Grand Rounds. Upon assuming this position, I expanded our outreach through the application of videoteleconferencing technology. Out Grand Rounds, held at Wilford Hall Medical Center, were broadcast to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX; Darnall Army Community Hospital in Ft. Hood, TX; william Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX; the 377th Medical Group at Kirtland AFB, NM; the Pediatric Clinic at Laughlin AFB, TX; Reynolds Army Community Hospital at Fort Sill, OK; and Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital at Ft. Polk, LA.
