Job Summary
The South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina is seeking a part-time staff writer (up to 15 hours per week). Directly reporting to the director of communications, this role’s primary responsibilities include interviewing students, faculty, alumni and other stakeholders to develop and write profile spotlights, feature stories, short-form web content and articles for the Honors alumni online magazine AHA!. The incumbent also writes national fellowships award announcements and winner features.

Several times a semester the writer will need to attend special events and activities outside of regular office hours to gather and write follow-up stories. This position is mostly remote, but does include on-campus meetings and on-campus reporting/coverage necessary for the job. Rate: $25-$35 per hour. Hourly rate will be commensurate with experience. 

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 2 or more years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience writing in Associated Press style.  Can provide a portfolio that demonstrates ability to write clear, compelling copy for multiple mediums. Detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to proofread and edit copy as well as conduct high-quality research and interviews.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize projects and meet deadlines.

Must be able to successfully work within the department’s online project management system. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
