Remembering desegregation at USC

On April 19, 2024, the University of South Carolina unveiled a monument honoring the first Black students admitted since Reconstruction. Robert Anderson, Henrie Monteith Treadwell and James Solomon Jr. altered the course of university history more than 60 years ago.

The 12-foot bronze statue stands in front of McKissick Museum on the historic Horseshoe and was inspired by a photo taken on Sept. 11, 1963, as the three students exited the Osborne Administration Building after enrolling at the university.
