Student Success Center offers individualized support for every Gamecock

Professional and personal development stands out as a defining pillar of the Carolina experience for Angela Fang, a senior global studies and economics major. And a large part of this transformation has come from utilizing the Student Success Center since her first year at the university.

Fang fondly recalls her visits to the Peer Writing and Communications program, which is designed to help students learn the fundamental writing strategies so crucial to success in college and post-graduation. Fang says her time at the writing center helped her writing and professional communication skills blossom.

“I'm just a student, not a professional writer, so having a second set of eyes reading over my work and receiving that feedback has been super helpful,” Fang says.

With English as her second language, Fang completed a communications internship in her third year at the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies at the university, using this experience to broaden her skillset as a future businesswoman.

“My college experience has been centered around going out of my comfort zone and pursuing what interests me,” Fang says. “And I’ve used our student resources here to help me reach my goals for a career and life in general.”

As a hub for academic programs and services, the Student Success Center helps students create good study habits and time management skills. Tutors are available for 215 courses — both general education and advanced major studies.

Students can choose from one-on-one tutoring sessions or group sessions led by supplemental instruction leaders. They can also receive a consultation to learn how to study more effectively on their own. One study strategy popular during exam season helps students learn how to predict questions they might see on exams, helping them better focus on key information.

The Student Success Center also offers free notebooks, pens, blue books and other materials at Gamecock School Supplies. The shop also rents calculators and iClickers.

The Out-to-Lunch Program helps students get to know their professors in a more relaxed, out-of-the-classroom environment and to start building their networks of professionals. By signing up for this program, students will receive a dining card to cover their professor’s lunch costs.

The center's Money Management Program was named one of the top 50 financial literacy programs by LendEDU. Students can make an appointment for a consultation or register online for the free learning module.

Students never have to wait long to receive the support they need. They can schedule an appointment or drop in six days a week at one of 10 different locations in academic buildings and residence halls.
