Whether you are a first-year student or nearing the end of your college career, now is the perfect time to explore the events UofSC has to offer and find community on campus.
This semester, UofSC Welcome 2020 consists of three weeks of virtual, hybrid or safety-minded in-person activities to celebrate students' arrival on campus. All events have been adapted or modified to allow for safe in-person attendance or virtual to make popular events accessible for more students.
One of the best ways to meet new people and bond through similar interests is to join a student organization. This year there will be a multi-day Student Organization Tour Aug. 24-28 in the Russell House University Union Ballroom and the Carolina Coliseum Concourse. The tour consists of 11 sessions themed around student organization categories. Students will be able to sign up to participate in a 19-minute time slot to interact and learn more about the student organizations. Visit the Leadership and Service Center Website to view the schedule and register.
Along with the Student Organization Tour, here are some of the events we are looking forward to most in the upcoming days.
Monday, Aug. 24
Join the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Russell House Ballroom for the OMSA CommUNITY Welcome. The OMSA CommUNITY Welcome is a celebration of campus diversity for new and returning students and will feature a virtual scavenger hunt and prizes. At this event you will learn about student organizations and campus partners that work with Multicultural Student Affairs. Can’t make the in-person program? A video will be posted on the OMSA website to help you get to know the student organizations that make up our Leadership Council. Be sure to register for the event in advance on the OMSA website.
Tune in Monday through Friday this week to find your volunteer fit with the Community Service Fair. There will be daily videos featuring local community partners who will be discussing Columbia volunteer opportunities for individuals or groups. Watch on YouTube or check out the Leadership and Service Center's Community Partner Map to find an organization that matches your interests.
Tuesday, Aug. 25
Everyone loves free stuff, but what's better than free money? Carolina Productions will be hosting a virtual free money gameshow 8-9:30 p.m. for a chance to win some cash. Go to Carolina Production's Garnet Gate page for more info and the link to join virtually.
Wednesday, Aug. 26
When you complete UofSC Libraries’ Virtual Scavenger Hunt before midnight on Friday, you’ll discover must-know Libraries basics and be entered to win some cool swag and prizes. Explore the University Libraries’ website to find answers to the Virtual Scavenger Hunt Form.
Next, head over to Russell House at 6:30 p.m. for NPHC Meet the Greeks. This informal program is designed for candidates to learn more about the national and local history and traditions of the eight historically African-American fraternities and sororities within the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Attendees will also be able to see traditional steps and strolls linked to each organization.
Thursday, Aug. 27
Interested in a part-time job? Head over to Handshake from 1 to 4 p.m. for UofSC’s virtual part-time career fair.
If you think you have what it takes to escape, join Carolina Productions at 8 p.m. for Thursday after Dark with a virtual escape room. Experience the adventure through the link on Garnet Gate.
Friday, Aug. 28
Cockadoodle Friday is new this semester. Leave your mark on campus every Friday as Greene Street turns into your canvas. Gamecock Entertainment will provide the chalk so you can create a mural of your choice.
Saturday, Aug. 29
Enjoy a live show from stand-up comedian Mandal in Russell Underground or view the event’s live stream from the comfort of your home. Free laughs start at 8 p.m.
