Tayloe Harding named interim provost

Tayloe Harding, the dean of the University of South Carolina School of Music, has been named the university’s interim provost, effective July 1.

“Dean Harding has been an effective leader of academic and administrative affairs, not only as dean of the School of Music since 2005, but also as interim dean of the South Carolina Honors College (2010-2011) and the interim dean of the College of Social Work (2016-2017),” President Harris Pastides said in an email to faculty and staff. The recommendation to appoint Harding was made by the university's Interim President-Elect Brendan Kelly.

Along with serving as dean of the School of Music, Harding is a composer and passionate advocate for advancing the impact of higher education music study and experience on American communities and national society.

The provost is the university’s chief academic officer who oversees the schools and colleges of the Columbia campus.

Harding will take over for Provost Joan Gabel, who has been provost since 2015 and becomes the new president of the University of Minnesota on July 1.
