Students study abroad thanks to Carolina's Promise

A cross-country trip in a packed 1956 Mercury station wagon sounds like the premise of a bad Hollywood comedy.

But for John Knight, there was nothing make-believe about such long distance drives. Nor was there anything bad. He loved the times his mother, brothers and he would set out to see the country.

Years later, Knight and his wife, Dodie, would replicate those adventures by taking their nieces and nephews to Europe as a college graduation present. When they saw what educational experiences the trips were, they decided to do something for students at his alma mater.

The couple created the John and Dodie Knight Study Abroad Award at Carolina. The financial assistance has helped dozens of students see — and learn about the world. Students can apply for the award through the Study Abroad Office
