Shirley Staples Carter spends her days helping to create the next generation of public relations professionals and her commitment to the UofSC doesn't stop when she leaves the classroom.
Because of that passion, Carter was asked along with associate vice president for student affairs and academic support, Jerry Brewer to be co-chairs of this year's Family Fund campaign.
"It's a reinvestment in the university's promise to its students and for generations to come," says Carter.
The Family Fund has raised more than $44 million for scholarships and other initiatives since it was created in the 1970s. Faculty, staff and retirees are able to contribute to areas where they have a passion.
"The University of South Carolina has been important to me for close to 40 years. My wife, my children, my nephew are all a part of it. So, I invest my money in things that are important to me," says Brewer.
The campaign kick-off titled, "Tailgate Before the Tailgate" will be held at 11 a.m. August 27 at the Russell House Ballroom. President Harris Pastides, Athletics Director Ray Tanner and Coach Dawn Staley will make remarks. Entertainment will be provided by the pep band, the cheerleaders and Cocky.
Contributions to the Family Fund count toward the goal of raising $1 billion by 2015. You can find out more about the Carolina's Promise campaign here.
