VIDEO: Students' favorite professor wins U101 award



David DeWeil has the unique opportunity to be the first connection student's make at the University of South Carolina. As the associate principal in the Capstone Scholars program, DeWeil speaks with prospective students, encouraging them to find their niche at the university and not to be afraid to make mistakes.

DeWeil also teaches University 101, a class dedicated to connecting first-year students to all that Carolina has to offer. His kind and humorous personality, paired with his passion for serving students earned him this year's University 101 teaching award.

Students say DeWeil is always available to help. His approach to teaching centers on his belief that community is the No. 1 necessity of a student in college. Building relationships and expanding students' minds to the world around them are DeWeil's top priorities. As a Carolina alumnus, DeWeil treasures his experiences at the university and shares many traits with his students. His ability to relate to them is what they most admire.
