Motorized, two-wheeled vehicles are becoming more common on campus, and some different laws and safety guidelines exist for these vehicles. To stay safe and on the right side of the law, here are 10 things to know about moped and scooter operation on the University of South Carolina campus:

  1. Scooters have engines greater than 50 CC and are identified with a motorcycle license plate.

  2. Mopeds have engines less than 50 CC and are identified with a Moped tag.

  3. Both mopeds and scooters must be registered with Parking Services.

  4. Places to park: only in the designated moped/scooter spaces.

  5. Places not to leave your moped or scooter: bicycle racks, sidewalks, secured to a building or garbage receptacle, or inside any university building.

  6. Mopeds and scooters cannot be driven on any sidewalk at any time.

  7. Mopeds and scooters are subject to the same traffic laws as cars and can only be driven on the street.

  8. It is illegal to exceed 25 MPH on a moped.

  9. Only one person can ride a moped at any time.

  10. Any person under the age of 21 is required to wear a helmet while operating a moped or scooter.
