Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Programs

Our pharmacy residents have the opportunity to practice basic professional skills while developing and implementing innovative patient care programs in a community setting.

The University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy and the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center partner with a variety of community-based pharmacy practice sites to offer post-graduate residency training.

Our community-based pharmacy residents develop strong clinical, business, and entrepreneurship skills through the following programs:

PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program

The USC College of Pharmacy Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications. 

Our postgraduate year one (PGY1) Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program, offered in collaboration with the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center, aims to develop pharmacy leaders who can improve the health of patients within the communities they serve.

The program has five practice sites – one with Medicine Mart Pharmacy in West Columbia, SC, one at Hawthorne Pharmacy in Columbia, SC, one with HopeHealth in Florence, SC, and two with Premise Health.  The Premise Health positions are located at the Associate Family Health Center in Greer, SC and the Wiggins Family Medical Center and Pharmacy in Carrollton, GA.  The Premise Health positions are combined with our PGY2 Community-Based Pharmacy Administration & Leadership program

PGY1 residents will be involved with enhancing and developing value-added patient care services in the community pharmacy setting, including immunizations, disease state management and education programs, medication therapy management, health screenings and community outreach programs.  In addition, residents will have the opportunity to develop, implement and manage a new patient care service at their site. 

Residents receive entrepreneurial business-focused training and support from KPIC.  Residents will complete a research project, present an abstract and poster at a national meeting and complete a formalized presentation. Many teaching opportunities exist at both the practice site and at the College of Pharmacy, including a required teaching certificate program.  Additionally, the residents participate in a yearlong professional development series that includes leadership training and the creation of a business plan for a position post-residency

PGY1 residents will:

  • Provide evidence-based, patient-centered care and collaborate with other health care professionals to optimize patient care
  • Exercise leadership and practice management skills
  • Develop new ideas and approaches to improve quality or overcome barriers to advance the profession of community pharmacy
  • Provide medication and practice-related information, education, and/or training

PGY1 / PGY2 Community-Based Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency Program

The USC College of Pharmacy Community-Based Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency Program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. 

PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Our combined PGY1-Community-Based Pharmacy and PGY2 Community-Based Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency Program is offered in collaboration with Premise Health with a practice site at the Associate Family Health Center in Greer, SC and the Wiggins Family Medical Center and Pharmacy in Carrollton, GA.

The PGY2 residents will receive pharmacy-specific outcomes research training from faculty at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy.  The PGY2 year builds upon the resident’s competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities.

Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills.

The program is designed to develop a pharmacist who can provide high quality patient care, manage an innovative pharmacy practice at a local or corporate level, evaluate the impact of the patient care provided, and advance the profession of pharmacy.  Additionally, residents will participate in pharmacy profession advocacy efforts at the local, state and national level.  Graduates will be prepared for a high level managerial, supervisory and leadership position that is responsible for developing and managing an innovative community-based patient care practice within a health care system.

PGY2 residents will: 

  • Design, implement, manage, and provide effective clinical and operational pharmacy services in collaboration with other health care professionals
  • Apply contemporary quality methodology to the management of pharmacy and health care services
  • Manage the pharmacy’s budget and monitor financial performance.
    Lead and manage the pharmacy’s human resources
  • Demonstrate personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to advancing the profession and practice of pharmacy
  • Develop community partnerships that positively impact public health
