Greetings to USC's First-Generation Students

October 31, 2024

Dear First-Generation Student,

As the University of South Carolina prepares to celebrate First-Generation Celebration Week in November, I want to send my best wishes and encouragement to you – one first-generation student to another! You have made a life-changing choice to seek a college education, and your university is committed to helping you succeed in this important journey.

Many of the campus leaders, staff and faculty members at USC share with you the experience of being the first in their families to attend college. They understand the challenges that first-gen students face each day. When I enrolled in college, I was the first in my family to pursue higher education. It was not always easy, but I knew it was the strongest foundation for my future. I am grateful for that first step and for everyone who helped me along the way.

As a USC student, you are on your own path to earning a college degree. To help you make the most of opportunities to succeed, USC has established a First-Generation Center to provide guidance and support, and we offer academic, financial and other on-campus resources to empower you to meet your goals.

During First-Generation Celebration Week, November 4-8, USC will offer a variety of activities and events to celebrate you and introduce you to some of these resources. The week will include:

  • Headshots on the Horseshoe – No-cost headshots to use as you apply for internships, jobs, and other opportunities
  • Donuts and coffee with first-generation faculty and staff members
  • Breakfast with campus leaders and fellow first-gen students
  • Professionally You workshop series (assistance with resumés, cover letters, interview prep, professional dress, LinkedIn, Mentorship Hub, and more)
  • Mental Health, Self-Care and Wellness session
  • Education Abroad webinar for you and your family/supporters
  • First-Gen Celebration Day tailgate on Friday at Greene Street

Please take advantage of these special events designed to celebrate our first-generation students. We are invested in your success, and we look forward to seeing what you will achieve at the University of South Carolina!

Sincerely,

Michael Amiridis
President
