Some of the numbers of the incoming class of freshmen and how they are supported

With total attendance at the University of South Carolina topping 38,000 for the first time, a new class of Gamecocks bring excitement and an energetic buzz back to the Columbia campus and metro area. Here are some numbers about our incoming students that help give a picture of the resources it takes to support them, the activities they take part in and how they’ll impact campus life. 

Incoming students

7,290 — estimated number of freshmen entering the University of South Carolina this fall 

3,800 — estimated number of freshmen who are residents of South Carolina, 52 percent of the class

46 — estimated number of counties in South Carolina represented by this fall’s freshman class

31 — estimated sets of twins entering the University of South Carolina this fall as freshmen

46 — estimated number of states represented by this fall’s freshman class

130 — estimated number of student-athletes in the freshman class

 550 — expected number of new international students, representing 87 countries

$490 million — approximate amount of financial aid dollars received by the university’s students in 2023-24 

Moving in

9,060 — projected number of students who will live in university housing this year (including Park Place and some placements in the Greek Village and 650 Lincoln) 

2,802 — number of undergraduates participating in specialized communities within the residence halls 

845 — number of faculty, staff and current students serving as a part of the volunteer move-in crew to welcome and move in new students 

30.04 — tons of cardboard recycled during move-in 2024

171,100 — packages delivered to resident students during the 2023-24 academic year, with 18,100 delivered through the August 2023 move-in period and nearly 10,000 parcels delivered to the new lockers at Russell House.

Feeding the crowds

Over 800 — associates (320 being USC students) and 10 campus chefs with Carolina Food Co. serving the university community at six dining halls and over 30 retail locations across campus 

8 — Columbia food truck/restaurant partnerships featured on campus

2.3 million — orders on GrubHub over the 2023-24 academic year with 67 percent of retail dining orders placed via the mobile app

20 — Starship delivery robots on campus delivering to 55 locations across campus

1,781 — miles Starship delivery robots have traveled making deliveries since their launch in Feburary 2024

73 — tons of food waste composted and diverted from landfills

4 — restaurants that have Green Level 1 certifications from the Green Restaurant Association 

Keeping students healthy

14,540 — number of patients/clients who had health or wellness visits with Student Health Services in 2023-24 

79,952 — number of patient/client visits to Student Health Services in 2023-24

2,244 — number of flu shots administered by Student Health Services in 2023-24

20,685 — number of prescriptions filled at the pharmacy in 2023-24

Sports and student life

628 — number of registered student organizations

75,592 — student tickets scanned for the seven home football games

181,945 — student tickets distributed for football, baseball and men’s and women’s basketball in the 2023-24 academic year

50,520 — number of commencement guest tickets distrusted for the 2023-24 academic year 

2.1 million — total traffic in the Russell House University Union in the calendar year of 2023

749,116 — total traffic in the Thomas Cooper Library in 2023-24

Students serving

5,104.5 — volunteer hours of service that 224 student volunteers served in the CommUnity Shop serving 7,458 visits, an economic impact of $170,949.70. 

$1.4 million — dollars raised by fraternity and sorority members for chapter-based philanthropy efforts during the 2023-24 academic year

Nearly 8,400 — students affiliated with USC fraternities and sororities in 2023-24

Parents and families

7,671 — number of parents, family members, and USC students who participated in Family Weekend 2023; Family Weekend 2024 is set for Sept. 19-21, with 6,103 wristbands sold as of Aug. 26

83,478 — parents and family members registered with the Gamecock Family Hub

Recreational sports

3,308 — intramural games played during the 2023-24 season, for 1,288 teams

610,023 — total traffic in Wellness & Fitness Center in 2023-24

3,104 — number of engagements in Outdoor Recreation activities (climbing wall, adventure trips, ORec Hub) during 2023-24

2,350 — number of Group X classes offered throughout 2023-24 (averaging ~75 classes per week)

Achieving student success

8,500 — number of free student planners available for current students

359 — students serving as Peer Leaders providing peer-to-peer support in 2023-24

8,297 — visits to Peer Tutoring in 2023-24
