Presidential Candidate Search Committee holds second meeting

The University of South Carolina’s Presidential Candidate Search Committee met virtually on Thursday (June 10) to discuss preparations for beginning the most important aspects of its work.

Interim President Harris Pastides spoke to the committee about qualities to consider among potential presidential candidates, including experience and diversity. I.S. Leevy Johnson, chair of the UofSC Columbia Community Advisory Committee, also shared advice based on his experiences serving as a member of other search committees.

The committee discussed a proposed contractual matter about hiring a search firm in executive session.

The search committee will provide at least two opportunities for members of every UofSC System stakeholder group to communicate opinions to the search committee. Those groups will include faculty senates and assemblies, faculty and academic deans, students, educational foundation boards, staff members and alumni.

The committee will seek feedback around two themes: the primary issues facing the university system and the next president, and the qualities and qualifications needed to lead the institution.

The next Presidential Candidate Search Committee meeting is scheduled for June 24.
