Free things for students to do on campus

Let’s be real. It can be challenging to find ways to beat boredom and FOMO when you’re a broke college student. Luckily there is always something fun and more importantly free happening right here on campus. Here’s a look at some entertaining activities and events that both you and your wallet will enjoy this semester. Click the photos below for more information about each budget-friendly activity.

There’s a new movie showing every weekend at the Carolina Theater in Russell House thanks to Carolina Productions. Flicks that will play during the next few weekends are “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Knives Out” and “Queen and Slim.” Also, be on the look out for upcoming Gamecock Picture Shows. When the weather is nice, Gamecock Entertainment shows films outside in locations such as Davis Field or on the pool deck at Strom.
Student tickets for athletic events are always free for full time students. You can show your spirit without dropping a dime whether you’re at Colonial Life Arena cheering on our #1 Women’s Basketball team or at Founders Park enjoying Baseball’s home opener on Feb. 14.
Looking to try something new? Gamecock Entertainment’s weekly Thursday After Dark events always impress. We are especially looking forward to musical bingo, goat yoga and escape rooms.
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs’ Hip Hop Wednesday is definitely a crowd favorite. Stop by Greene Street between classes on Feb. 5, March 4 and April 8 while a DJ spins new and old school hip hop music.
There’s no need to go to an expensive yoga studio to get your much needed dose of zen. Head to the C.A.L.M. Oasis space in the Student Health Center for yoga, mindfulness and meditation.
It will only cost you your time to help better the Carolina community. Service Saturday is a monthly service day where volunteers can choose from a range of service sites. With your transportation and lunch provided, you'll enjoy your service even more.
Every Monday, if the weather's good, the nearly century-old dome on the Melton Observatory slips open and the 16-inch Cassegrain telescope brings celestial bodies down to Earth. Make sure to check for weather updates and plan a night to see the wonders of the sky for yourself.
Pass time between classes, hang out with friends or just enjoy a change in scenery at the Golden Spur Game Room, located on the basement level of the Russell House. Participate in some friendly competition with billiards, ping-pong, foosball, board games, video games and playing cards.
Improve your cooking chops at a free cooking class at the Student Health Center. You can sign up for the free cooking classes along with other workshops on My Health Space. Make sure to sign up early though, because classes fill up quickly.
Finally, take in the beautiful sights of the heart of campus on the Horseshoe. Relax, throw a frisbee or enjoy a picnic with friends while you take in the historic scenery
