Give It Up For Good

Bargain hunters rejoice: Annual charity yard sale set for June 1-2

It’s a win for University of South Carolina students, for Midlands bargain hunters and for Habitat for Humanity: the annual Give It Up For Good Yard Sale sponsored by University Housing, which takes place this year on June 2 with a preview on June 1.

New this year is the sale location; after struggling with weather for outdoor locations and boucing between other indoor locations, the organizers have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to repurpose the former Habitat Restore at 483 Sunset Blvd. in West Columbia as the donation and sale hub.

“Following last year’s sale, our goal was to find a location that could serve as storage, sorting area and sale site so that we could eliminate the unnecessary labor in an already labor intensive project,” says Larry Cook, the university’s recycling and waste management manager. “The location is still very close and convenient to campus and has plenty of parking for sale customers.”

In 2017, the 38,560 pounds of donated items resulted in $11,758 for Habitat for Humanity and over 2,240 pounds of food donations for Harvest Hope. This year, the inventory promises ample opportunity for another successful fundraiser.

“The most striking thing about the sale is the sheer volume of stuff. We have vintage furniture, clothes still with the tags on, office supplies, toys, appliances, it just goes on and on. Some of the funniest to come across during sorting are the costumes. But what always surprises me is just how much there is,” Cook says.

The sale is free and open to the public from 7 a.m. to noon on June 2, but from 4 to 6 p.m. on June 1, Carolina Card-holders can preview the sale for $5 and members of the public can preview it for $10.
