NYC Ballet Stars to shine in 12th Annual ‘Ballet Stars of New York’ gala

Six of world’s top ballet dancers will perform as part of the University of South Carolina Department of Theatre and Dance's 12th annual "Ballet Stars of New York Gala” at 5 p.m., March 19, at the Koger Center for the Arts.

The concert will feature New York City Ballet dancers Sara Mearns, a Columbia native, Jared Angle, Joaquin De Luz, Megan Fairchild, Brittany Pollack and Emilie Gerrity. The USC Symphony Orchestra and students from the USC Dance Company also will be part of the program. University ballet instructor Stacey Calvert, a former soloist with the New York City Ballet, will direct the concert, and Maestro Donald Portnoy will lead the symphony.

Three iconic ballets will be performed: George Balanchine's "Raymonda Variations," which is a take on the Russian ballet "Raymonda", "Barber Violin Concerto Pas de Deux" and the full-length ballet "Who Cares?," a whimsical dance tribute to the music of George Gershwin.

Tickets, which cost $35 for orchestra, $25-$30 for balcony and $15 for students, are available at the Koger Center box office, by phone at 803-777-5112 or online

A gala fundraiser with a “Dancing at the Starlight Ballroom” theme will take place after the performance backstage. The event will include food by Loosh Culinaire Fine Cuisine of Columbia and dancing to the jazz music by Columbia-based musician Mark Rapp and his band. Tickets, which cost $150 per person, includes orchestra seating to the concert and valet parking. Gala tickets are available contacting Sabrina McClure in the university’s dance program at 803-777-1001. All proceeds benefit scholarships for university dance students.
