Haley, Scott, Staley to deliver UofSC commencement addresses

Gov. Nikki Haley, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, and Gamecocks Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Staley will deliver the commencement addresses at the May 8-9 ceremonies at the University of South Carolina.
Haley will address graduates at the 3 p.m. ceremony Friday, May 8, in the Colonial Life Arena that includes students from the Darla Moore School of Business, College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, College of Nursing, South Carolina College of Pharmacy and the Arnold School of Public Health.
The governor will receive an honorary degree of doctor of public service.
Also at the Friday commencement ceremony, William “Bill” Putnam, a retired faculty member and associate dean of Carolina’s business school, will receive an honorary degree of doctor of education.
At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, Scott will address graduates of the South Carolina Honors College and the College of Arts and Sciences. He will receive the honorary degree of doctor of public service.
At 3 p.m. Saturday, Staley, who led the women’s basketball team to the 2015 Final Four, will address graduates of the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Computing, the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, the Fort Jackson Military Base Program, Interdisciplinary Programs, Palmetto College, the School of Music and the College of Social Work.
Also at the Saturday afternoon commencement, Jane T. Upshaw, chancellor of USC Beaufort, will receive the honorary degree of doctor of education.
The Columbia campus commencement ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. Friday, May 8, when Robert J. Grey Jr., former president of the American Bar Association and executive director of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, addresses graduates of the School of Law on the historic Horseshoe.
Also Friday, Atul Atmaram Gawande, a surgeon, author and public health researcher, will address graduates of the medical school at 12:30 p.m. at the Koger Center for the Arts.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, the doctoral commencement and hooding ceremony will take place at the Koger Center for the Arts. Frank T. Avignone, professor of physics and astronomy, will speak at the ceremony.
The university’s other campuses will hold commencement ceremonies this spring, including:
USC Salkehatchie: Noon, Friday, May 1. Anita Zucker will address graduates.
USC Beaufort: 6 p.m. Friday, May 1. Chancellor Jane T. Upshaw will address graduates. John F. “Jack” Brinkley will receive an honorary degree.
USC Lancaster: 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Congressman John Michael “Mick” Mulvaney will address graduates.
USC Union: 6 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Rep. Michael A. “Mike” Anthony will address graduates.
USC Sumter: 6 p.m. Monday, May 4. Rep. Murrell Smith will address graduates.
USC Upstate: 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5. David Seaton will address graduate. Henry C. Giles Jr. will receive an honorary degree.
USC Aiken: 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 6. Kenneth “Ken” Starr will address graduates.
