The Council of Academic Diversity Officers in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will sponsor a workshop for university faculty and staff on “Recognizing and Responding to Racial Trauma in Academia.” The training will take place 12:30–1:30 p.m. Nov. 10.
April D. Scott, associate director of mental health initiatives, will discuss the history of racial trauma and race-related stress and how it shows up in the classroom. This training will cover the emotional and psychological consequences of not attending to racial trauma in academic spaces and will identify ways faculty can adapt and respond to racial trauma, particularly during times of racial injustice.
In her role at the university, Scott is responsible for decreasing public and personal stigma surrounding mental health conditions, coordinating mental health outreach, training and education to faculty, staff and students and working with campus administrators to improve students’ well being.
Registration for the workshop is open.
