Fall 2019 Maxcy Visiting Fellow

The Fall 2019 Maxcy Visiting Fellow, Djamila Ribeiro, will present a lecture on "Black Feminism in Brazil" at 8 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Russell House Theater.

Ribeiro is a writer, feminist philosopher, columnist and Afro Latina activist. She is one of the most recognized public intellectuals working in Brazil today. Among her prolific writings is her book, Quem Tem Medo de Feminismo Negro? (Who's Afraid of Black Feminism?), which was published in 2018. In 2019, she was honored as one of eight laureates of the Prince Claus fund for Culture and Development, one of the most prestigious awards offered in The Netherlands.

Ribeiro is the ninth Maxcy Visiting Fellow to visit UofSC. Every semester since 2015, the Carolina International House hosts a renowned international figure from the world of arts, scholarship or activism to spend a week with students and to share their unique points of view.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
