Solving the nursing workforce shortage
With the new space at LMC, USC will be able to graduate 400 nurses per year in the Midlands — an 80% increase annually — in three to five years after transitioning to the new campus. The new building will be used primarily for clinical training of the university’s third- and fourth-year nursing bachelor’s students as well as master’s program students.
A new 50,000 square foot teaching facility will be constructed on Lexington Medical Center’s (LMC) main hospital campus in partnership with the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. It will house a state of the art simulation center and classroom space to provide clinical education and simulation training for USC’s growing nursing population.
The new facility will serve BSN Upper Division (Juniors and Seniors) and Master’s Entry to Practice Nursing (MEPN) students. In addition, clinical immersion for nurse practitioner students will be held at this new campus. We anticipate that the larger interprofessional education courses will also be offered at this campus.
The campus expansion is expected to open for the first cohort of nursing students in fall 2024.
Pre-nursing Lower Division freshman and sophomore students, as well as the graduate and PhD nursing programs (excluding MEPN and graduate immersion) will remain on the College of Nursing Columbia campus. Research centers and Center for Nursing Leadership will also remain on the Columbia campus.
