Become a Preceptor

Prepare future nurse leaders by sharing your expertise and talents with current students by providing real-world learning opportunities within your practice. As a University of South Carolina College of Nursing Preceptor you will be working some of the best and the brightest nursing students.

Shape the next generation

As a USC Nursing preceptor, you have the opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise by mentoring Nurse Practitioner students throughout the semester and providing meaningful learning experiences within your practice. Our students are motivated, engaged, and eager to learn from compassionate, dedicated health care professionals. The college selects outstanding students for its nationally ranked online graduate programs, and your guidance plays a vital role in their success.

Serving as a preceptor is also a meaningful way to give back to the profession that once supported you.

Precepting FAQs

Eligible preceptors include Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives and Physician Assistants who hold an active South Carolina license and have been licensed for at least one year prior to the start of the semester in which they will precept.

As a preceptor, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Receive verification of preceptor hours for ANCC or other certification agencies (many certification agencies offer CE credit for precepting).
  • Earn a SC preceptor tax credit (SC Senate Bill 969).
  • Get access to seminars and training (some with CNE and ANCC credit).
  • Be eligible to receive a USC account with access to university email, library resources, and fitness centers, and purchase university athletic event tickets and parking permits.

Preceptors provide our students with the opportunity to obtain real-life, hands-on experience while providing guidance and clinical expertise. We also expect preceptors to let us know when they have any questions or concerns.
