Helping your house feel good (and bad) vibrations

Professor Juan Caicedo presents at TEDx UofSC

If you wanted to call Juan M. Caicedo a mover and a shaker, you’d be right. And it’s all in the name of science — and safety. A professor and the University of South Carolina’s undergraduate director of civil engineering, Caicedo’s team has developed technology that monitors vibrations in homes in order to detect accidents in real time, so tomorrow’s smart home may be the difference between life and death. Juan Caicedo is a civil engineer and is especially interested in structural engineering. He conducts numerical and experimental research in the areas of structural dynamics, model updating, structural health monitoring, earthquake engineering and structural control. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
