Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Research: Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) UAS Communications

This project will extend prior work on UAS air-ground channel modeling and air interface evaluation for lower altitude UAS, and investigate novel and robust PHY/MAC techniques for UAS-satellite systems. Research topics include high-fidelity tropospheric attenuation modeling (C-, Ku- and Ka-bands) and air-satellite channel modeling, satellite MIMO techniques, air-satellite waveform designs and evaluation (including multicarrier and spread spectrum), intra- and inter-system interference analyses, link latency and networking evaluations, and contributing to international standards bodies (ITU, ICAO, and RTCA). Collaboration with NASA in air-satellite-ground field experiments will also form an important activity in this project.
