PMECS Hosts Engineering and Computing Summer Camp

The University of South Carolina College of Engineering and Computing will host 125 high school students from across the state for the annual PMECS summer camp from June 22-26. PMECS, or Partners for Minorities in Engineering and Computer Science, is a partnership between educators and businesses that provides gifted minority students with academic enrichment activities in engineering and computer science.

 Through a series of hands-on technical workshops, students are exposed to various science, technology, engineering and math skills. They also job shadow engineers and computer scientists from our partner businesses. Rising high-school freshmen spend four days on the USC campus, and sophomores, juniors and seniors spend six days on campus. The students stay in dormitories, which gives them a true college experience.

 The College of Engineering and Computing faculty and staff assist with the workshops. Companies who support PMECS include MeadWestvaco Foundation, Westinghouse, Norfolk Southern, Nucor, Piedmont Natural Gas Company, South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, Fluor, Michelin, Santee Cooper, BMW, AKA Gamma Nu Omega Chapter, and SCE&G.
