Promoting Computer Science

Computer science is a top paying college degree and computer programming jobs are growing at twice the national average. Yet, there are still 1-million more computer science jobs than graduating computer science students. Less than 3 percent of college students graduate with a degree in computer science.

 The reason for such low numbers stems from a majority of schools not offering computer programming classes and only 27 states crediting computer science toward math or science graduation requirements.

In an attempt to encourage more students to study computer science, Code.org organizes Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) each year. This year, the week will take place December 7-13.

 CSEdWeek is a grassroots campaign supported by 350 partners and 100,000 educators worldwide.

 Code.org uses the Hour of Code as a platform to raise awareness about computer science. Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. It is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries.

There are currently 148,864 Hour of Code events set to take place.
