Awards Day Recipients
The accomplishments of University of South Carolina students are evident in the classroom, campus and beyond. We’re proud to recognize these students for demonstrating personal and academic excellence and a commitment to leadership, scholarship and service.
Our spring Awards Day ceremony recognizes the many accomplishments of our student community during the academic year. Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards
At the University of South Carolina, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards are presented each year to the most outstanding senior female and senior male student.
Shannon DePratter
Driven by a passion to help others, South Carolina Honors College senior Shannon DePratter participated in several service organizations while completing her degree in biomedical engineering — a degree she completed in only three years. During her time at the university, the Newberry, South Carolina, native served as president of the Theta Tau professional engineering fraternity and also focused on mentoring and leading younger students while working to make organizations more accessible and inclusive for all students.

Edgar Lemus Rivera
First-generation senior Edgar Lemus Rivera plans to continue his dedication to volunteerism and service by working his way through medical school to become a physician. The biochemistry and molecular biology major from Toms River, New Jersey, plans to continue his education at the USC School of Medicine Greenville. In addition to volunteering with the Good Samaritan Clinic in Columbia and serving as vice president of the Phi Delta Epsilon medical fraternity, he helped restart workshops for students navigating the process of applying to medical school.

Steven N. Swanger Award
The Steven N. Swanger Award recognizes a senior student for significant contributions to the university as an Omicron Delta Kappa member.
Natalie Trimble
South Carolina Honors College senior and nursing student Natalie Trimble is recognized in the areas of service, leadership, academics and research. In addition to serving in various capacities in Student Government and Student Senate, she volunteered in the Columbia community and for nonprofits including the Free Medical Clinic and Cocky’s Canine PAALS. Her research, including projects studying the relationship between stress and chronic conditions in college students, and the effects of continuity of care for people with diabetes, were presented at Harvard University, Discover USC and the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science.
