Senior environmental studies major Raeva Bali is one of only five recipients nationwide to earn a 2025 FAO Schwarz Fellowship. She is the first University of South Carolina student to receive this award. Through this opportunity, Bali will spend two years working with the Trust for Public Land nonprofit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
What it is
Sponsored by the FAO Schwarz Family Foundation, this fellowship provides opportunities for recent college graduates to participate in two-year internships with nonprofit organizations in Boston, Massachusetts, New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In line with the Schwarz family's history of operating an iconic New York City toy store, each nonprofit sponsored by the Foundation focuses on impacting children. The Foundation emphasizes social impact areas such as education, the environment and the arts.
Why it matters
FAO Schwarz scholars are leaders in the making who wish to work at the forefront of social impact initiatives. The Trust for Public Land, Bali’s host organization, protects parks and ensures that outdoor recreation areas are accessible. Drawing from her environmental studies major and mass communications minor, Bali will work at Philadelphia Community Schoolyard sites, creating and implementing environmental education activities. She will also direct the Trust for Public Land’s mini-grants program, which provides funding for partner programs to implement stewardship projects. Originally from Hartsville, South Carolina, Bali looks forward to connecting with her new community and continuing to grow as a professional. In addition to invaluable experience in the nonprofit sector and professional development, FAO Schwarz fellows receive a $95,000 - $105,000 stipend.
What she’s saying: “These past four years at the University of South Carolina have allowed me to delve into many extracurriculars and classes that created a sturdy foundation on how to communicate sustainability impactfully to a wide array of audiences. Going forward as an FAO Schwarz Social Impact Fellow, I know that I will build upon this foundation and use the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to amplify my ability to drive meaningful change.”
