Senior global studies and political science double-major Ryan Lohr has earned the 2024 Rotary Global Grant. He is one of only two students to receive the award from Rotary District 7770 in South Carolina. The NROTC midshipman plans to pursue a master’s degree in conflict, security and development at King’s College London.
Why it matters
In addition to his double-major, Lohr is completing minors in Islamic world studies and naval science. His academic background, combined with his experiences learning Arabic as a two-time Project Global Officer fellowship recipient, have prepared Lohr for his chosen master’s program at King’s College London. While studying in London, he plans to work with Arabic-speaking refugees and help them learn English. Lohr will draw upon these experiences to foster peaceful resolutions to conflicts around the world during his career in the United States Marine Corps. He will commission as a second lieutenant upon graduation from King’s College London.
What it offers
The Rotary Global Grant, awarded by Rotary International, provides between $30,000 and $45,000 for graduate study abroad. The grant supports degrees and projects in one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus.
“This fellowship is special because within the application process you create this close connection with a local Rotary club that sponsors you,” says Lohr, who was sponsored by Vista Nights.
National Fellowships and Scholar Programs provides support for Rotary Global Grant applicants. Students interested in learning more should contact USC’s national fellowships team.
