About this Fellowship

FINESST grants support graduate students conducting research that aligns with the priorities of the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) in one or more of its six divisions: Earth Science, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, Astrophysics, Biological and Physical Science, and Science Engagement & Partnerships.

Deadlines are typically in February, but be sure to check the competition website for the current cycle’s deadline.

FINESST seeks proposals for a research project conducted by an individual Future Investigator (FI) who is or will be pursuing a Masters, PhD, or other terminal degree (e.g., MD) in an Earth or space sciences-related discipline from an accredited U.S. university. Applicants submit their proposal in coordination with their PI and university grants administration staff. Note: applicants must work with Sponsored Awards Management to submit the proposal.


Award Value

Awardees receive up to $150,000 ($50,000 per year for up to three years).
