XII. MISCELLANEOUS

A. Addresses

1) Use Postal Service state abbreviations with no periods in addresses.

2) Items in addresses should be listed in the following order:

Name, Title
College
Office, Agency, Center
Department
Institution
Street or Building, Room or Suite
City, State, Zip Code

Laurence Pearce
University Publications
University of South Carolina
920 Sumter St.
Columbia, SC 29208

Mary Ann Byrnes
College of Arts and Sciences
Office of the Dean
University of South Carolina
Gambrell Hall, Room 251
Columbia, SC 29208

B. Electronic Conventions

1) Internet, Web, and e-mail addresses should be written all lowercase, unless the address is case sensitive.

www.forum.net (When a Web address begins with www. or similar, it is not necessary to include http://.)
blowder@mailbox.sc.edu

2) Internet, World Wide Web, and their shortened forms are treated as proper nouns and capitalized in all instances.

the Web, the Net, WWW

3) Accepted spellings of electronic terms:

online, not on-line
e-mail, not email
homepage (lowercased in text)
Web site, not website or Website
CD-ROM (all uppercase)

4) A long URL or e-mail address may be broken and continued on a second line. Do not add a hyphen where the break appears; instead, make sure the break is after a slash or period in the Web address. Adding a hyphen leads to confusion about whether or not the hyphen itself is part of the address.

5) When writing copy for use on the Web, two hyphens may be substituted for an em dash.

C. Year 2000 and Beyond

1) When writing any span of time that mixes 20th- and 21st-century dates, the full year must be given for both.

1998–2002, not 1998–02

2) When citing class designations, if classes from the 20th and 21st centuries are listed, the full year must be given for all classes mentioned.

When the time capsule placed by the Class of 1955 is opened, members of the Class of 2005 will replace it with one of their own.

3) Do not attach the phrase the year to 2000 or beyond. Treat such references as any other year noted.

The University celebrated its bicentennial in 2001.

D. Specifing B.C. or A.D.

1) When attaching B.C. or A.D. to a year, B.C. follows the date, and A.D. precedes the date. (Note that any date that is not B.C. is A.D. by default and requires no specific designation.)

2) When referring to a century in text, the convention of placing either B.C. or A.D. after the stated century is acceptable.

E. Degrees listed with alumni names

When listing earned degrees with alumni names, the preferred order is: year, degree name (lowercase), discipline (if listed, lowercase). Do not place a comma between the year and degree name, but do place a comma between the degree name and discipline. Use of parentheses around degree information is optional. The last example below is accepted in Carolinian.

Madison Dinkum, 1997 law
Madison Dinkum, 1995 master’s
Madison Dinkum, 1993 BA, history
Madison Dinkum (1995 master’s, history)
Madison Dinkum, '07

F. Publications code

Publications generated through University Publications should be coded to indicate job number, office name, and month/year of publication. This is not required for periodicals. Coding should follow the antidiscrimination statement. A recycled paper logo and statement should be included as appropriate, as should be an FSC logo and text. As a general guide, type sizes should be no larger than 7 pt. for the antidiscrimination statement and 5 pt. for the publications code. For example:

(Set in 7 pt. size or smaller)
