Fellow Gamecocks,
CONGRATULATIONS!!! on your admission to the University of South Carolina. On behalf of the student body, I would like to welcome you to the Carolina Community and the city of Columbia - one of the south's most vibrant and exciting places.
As you join a student population of over 18,000 undergraduates and 10,000 graduate students, you may find the college life to be intimidating. However, the Student Government association at Carolina will help to make your experience more personal. SG - as it is affectionately called - is the governing body of over 300 student organizations. It serves as a metaphorical "umbrella" for all of these various groups. With student interests ranging from knitting to SAGE (students advocating for a greener earth), there is an organization that suits each and every one of you. Students, who get involved in these groups, become leaders, develop professionalism, make friends, and experience another side of Carolina that is both powerful and beautiful.
I also would like you to consider our upcoming activities to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, hosted in part by the Carolina Service Council, and other University programs such as Carolina Productions, student media, and intramurals. For additional information and a full list of events check out the MLK Celebration activities at http://www.sc.edu/usctimes/articles/2008-01/MLK_Day.html. Many students become involved in varied areas of campus to make their experiences at Carolina unique. Find out about many of these opportunities during the Student Organization Fair near the Russell House University Union on January 21st. My sincerest hope is that you are successful academically in your time here at Carolina and that you use the many resources our esteemed University has to offer.
If you need anything feel free to stop by my office located in the Russell House University Union Suite 227.
Best regards,
Andrew Gaeckle
