About the College of Social Work

In 1969 the College of Social Work (COSW) was formally established to offer social work professionals the opportunity to pursue advanced--and, later, post-doctoral--degrees in the field without leaving the state.

Throughout the years the college has addressed the changing needs of South Carolina's older adult population through research, education, and outreach.

Recently Dr. Terry Wolfer was selected by the Social Work Leadership Institute at the New York Academy of Medicine and the John A. Hartford Foundation to receive a Practicum Partnership Program grant for his project that focuses on geriatric social work in congregations.

COSW also leads the South Carolina Center for Gerontology, a consortium of state-supported institutions of higher education to use the expertise of gerontology and geriatric faculty from a variety of academic disciplines to assist in furthering the quality of life for older South Carolinians. Dr. Rita Chou, assistant professor of social work in COSW, leads the center. >> More
