AVID Tutor Program
The Advancement Via Individual Determination Tutor Program is part of the course work for a 400-level education class, in which pre-service teachers tutor students at the school four days a week. Because of AVID's success, it has expanded into other middle schools in Richland School District Two. Biographical Imaginations
Biographical Imaginations is a program sponsored by the Department of Educational Psychology that brings history to life through presentations at elementary, middle, and high schools. Dressed as South Carolina teachers from the 19th and early 20th centuries, actors present theatrical programs in the schools that re-create classrooms in the early days of education. Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series
This summer have serious fun at Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series, our award winning youth academic program. Have fun, meet new friends, and learn from top University of South Carolina faculty and research professors as you practice law and order, build your own robot- or your business, or author an anthology. Take an up close look at show business from the inside out, and find out whether weather is synonymous with climatology-that’s serious fun. These adventures will maximize your learning experience by enriching you physically, mentally, and socially. Join us this summer.
Submit your application by April 17, 2009, to qualify for an early-bird discount. The student must be a rising 6th through 12th grader and be academically talented and gifted to be eligible for enrollment. All classes are limited to 20 students unless otherwise noted. Columbia Area Health Professions Partnership Initiative
USC's Arnold School of Public Health partners with the Columbia Area Health Professions Partnership Initiative to provide opportunities for African Americans to learn about public health and public health professions. Darla Moore TRIO Scholars Program

Duke TIP Scholar Weekends
The University of South Carolina invites you to attend a Scholar Weekend on our beautiful flagship campus in Columbia! Duke TIP scholars can take short, intriguing courses in academic topics that might not be available in your local schools. Courses are designed by the South Carolina Honors College (SCHC), the University's small liberal arts school within our large research university. SCHC leads learning and drives discovery, so your classes will be enriching and creatively taught and will encourage your intellect. The University is the only S.C. school to host a Duke TIP event. Early Childhood At-Risk Family Initiative—USC Beaufort
USC Beaufort has engaged in a partnership with Penn Center to provide intensive and comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income families with preschool children to help meet the national goal of ensuring that all children in America will start school ready to learn. IDEAS—Incubator Developing Entrepreneurial Advancement and Success
IDEAS, or Incubator Developing Entrepreneurial Advancement and Success, is a program for high-school students in a low-achieving school to acquire technology, small-business development skills, and marketing skills. Junior Achievement
This students-helping-students volunteer program pairs K–12 students with graduate students in USC's MBA/IMBA Student Association in the Moore School of Business. The graduate business students receive training and teaching materials from the Junior Achievement Office in Columbia, then select from elementary, middle, and high schools near the University that have requested Junior Achievement volunteers. In the classrooms, the USC student volunteers lead local K-12 students in business-related activities appropriate for their grade level. Topics include how businesses operate, how they price and market their products, and how they hire and train their personnel. The activities and discussions are designed to teach basic business skills and concepts used in business and a free-enterprise system. Libraries
- USC science librarians provide building tours and bibliographic instruction sessions for science classes from state high schools and colleges. Instructing students from other colleges in the use of USC library resources is an important service to the state.
- USC's Science Library annually assists junior and senior high school students with their Science Fair projects through a special collection of books and materials for on-site patrons and a Web page for off-campus access.
- USC science librarians also have served as judges in the Region II Science and Engineering Fair, the National Ocean Science Bowl, and the FIRST LEGO League S.C. State Championship.
- K-12 teachers and media specialists can make appointments with USC reference librarians to learn how to use reference resources in USC's Thomas Cooper Library. The reference department also conducts tours for school groups and other University visitors.

University Test Prep provides thorough preparation for high stakes undergraduate admissions exams. The Institute provides 20 hours of on-campus classroom learning and is led by a professional test prep instructor. The Institute also offers comprehensive review opportunities through additional interactive online review sessions. Electrical Engineering Summer Camp

The Electrical Engineering Summer Camp will be offered to Rising 10th and 11th graders who have a special interest in engineering. Students will build and race a robot that can sense heat, light, and wind. Students will be taught by USC faculty and staff of the Electrical Engineering department at USC and will be engaged in a world of sensors and gain a better insight into what Electrical Engineering is all about. Camp Success - Experience Engineering
Rising 6th-8th graders

Students will discover careers in engineering and technology at Camp Success by going beyond the books and assisting a local community agency with an actual problem. Working alongside university professors, student project teams will work on real design and engineering problems that are impacting South Carolina community agencies and organizations. Students will use creativity, innovative thinking and problem-solving skills to develop a solution and learn about a broad range of career paths along the way. Southeastern Piano Festival
Rising 8th-12th graders
June 7-13, 2009
Aspiring pianists in grades 8 through 12 receive daily private lessons with University of South Carolina School of Music piano faculty, attend evening concerts performed by internationally renowned concert pianists, participate in master classes with guest artists, and perform in a professional concert setting. The festival culminates with the Arthur Fraser International Concerto Competitions, whose top three winners will perform with the South Carolina Philharmonic in the following season. Role Models in Medicine
Through this program, the USC School of Medicine encourages high school students to consider and plan for careers in medicine. The program includes annual campus visits for teachers and their students. For more information, call 803-733-3200.
Role Models to Success—USC Sumter
Since 1990, USC Sumter has sponsored the Role Models to Success program, which encourages minority youths to continue their education into college to open opportunities for greater self-reliance, self-esteem, and cultural enrichment. Role Models to Success provides role models who are minority business leaders and professionals from diverse fields who are living and working in the Sumter community and surrounding counties. These mentors emphasize the breadth of opportunities available to those who pursue higher education. Program participants are students from area high schools and middle schools selected by school counselors and administrators. South Carolina Beaufort: July 27-30, 2009
South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at USC
The institute, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, sponsors many outreach and public education programs annually throughout the state, including:
- S.C. Archaeology Month held every September. The observance features more than 100 events statewide in 50 locations with some 85 cooperating organizations. The institute also sends special mailings of upcoming archaeology events to more than 600 S.C. school teachers.
- In partnership with the National Audubon Society's Silver Bluff Audubon Center and Sanctuary on the banks of the Savannah River, researchers with the institute's Savannah River Archaeological Research Program in Aiken have been conducting excavations since 1996 with the help of volunteers at the George Galphin site. The site was once the location of a colonial trading post, frontier fort, and plantation bordering the banks of the Savannah River. Some 250 individuals visit or participate in the excavations each year, and more are reached through public lectures, visits to schools, and displays at local libraries, museums, and community events.
- Staff members of the institute's Savannah River Archaeological Research Project respond to requests from the community or local schools on subjects relating to archaeology, including last year's presentation to the Augusta Kiwanis Club, and programs for the Augusta Archaeological Society, Aiken Outdoors, the Ellenton Reunion, Native American Month celebrations, and North Augusta Kids Earth Day.
- In the institute's S.C. Abandoned and Historic Cemetery Program, institute expertise is provided to the public and to state and local governments in the identification, preservation, and management of abandoned and historic cemeteries throughout the state. It also provides expert testimony for civil and criminal proceedings.
- The state underwater archaeologist supervises the state's Sport Diver Archaeology Management Program, which guides the state's sport scuba divers in the identification, protection, and preservation of the South Carolina's underwater archaeological assets. South Carolina Scholastic Press Association
The College of Mass Communications and Information Studies is the home of the S.C. Scholastic Press Association, which offers conferences, workshops, publication evaluation, and annual contests for member middle and senior high schools across the state. The school also is home of the Southeast Interscholastic Press Association, which promotes professionalism in scholastic journalism and mass communications in the Southeast. Teacher Cadet Program
