SHIFTING FRONTIERS
V:
"Violence, Victims and
Vindication in Late Antiquity"
March 20-23,
2003
PRE-REGISTRATION AND
ARRANGEMENTS
The
fifth biennial Shifting Frontiers in Late Antiquity conference will be held on
the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara from 3 p.m. Thursday,
March 20 to approximately 3 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003. A conference program
is currently being prepared and will be available via email by mid-October,
2002. A total of 37 papers have been accepted for presentation, on topics
ranging from literature to archaeology. In addition, there will be three
keynote speakers: Jill Harries (St. Andrews University), "Violence,
Victims and the Roman Legal Tradition"; Walter Pohl (University of
Vienna), "Perceptions of Barbarian Violence"; Brent Shaw (University
of Pennsylvania), "Who Were the Circumcellions?"
What
follows is information regarding pre-registration, travel, and accomodations.
REGISTRATION.
Registration for the conference is now being accepted. Registration includes
admission
to the first night reception on March 20; continental breakfasts on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday; Saturday luncheon, a banquet featuring wines from local
vineyards, and a farewell brunch on Sunday, March 23. We also hope to provide a
performance by UCSB's renowned Middle East Ensemble.
Because
of limited capacity we are offering a special pre-registration price of $90
($45 students) until January 10, 2003. Registration after that date will be
$110 ($55 students). [Poster's comment: 3 breakfasts, a lunch, a brunch, and a
banquet is a *real bargain*. How many other conferences charge a $75-100
registration fee, and all one gets is a nametag??!]
To
register, please send your name, address, academic affiliation, and a check or
international money order payable to UC Regents to; Prof. H. A. Drake
Department of History University of California Santa Barbara, CA 93106-9410
International money orders should be in US dollars.
SUBSIDIES.
A limited amount of funding may be available for grants in the range of
$100-$200 to subsidize expenses. Priority will be given to graduate students
and international travellers. Please send requests to Prof. H. A. Drake at the
above address.
TRAVEL.
Santa Barbara is located approximately 90 miles north of Los Angeles and 300
miles south of San Francisco. Santa Barbara Municipal Airport is served by
United Express, American Eagle and America West airlines. Locals refer to it as
"charming" (read "small and expensive"); connections must
be made through either San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, or Phoenix.
Sometimes airlines offer these connecting flights at no extra charge, so it
would be worth checking, but ordinarily the additional cost is prohibitive.
Flights to Los Angeles are usually significantly cheaper.
Santa
Barbara Airbus runs a daily schedule of buses to Los Angeles International
Airport for a price of $35 one-way, $68 round-trip. If you are travelling with
another person, you can arrange a two-person roundtrip rate of $116. If you are
staying at the Holiday Inn (below), take the Airbus to its last stop (in
Goleta) and phone the Holiday Inn for a free pickup. For a schedule and booking
go to www.sbairbus.com or phone 1-800-
423-1618.
ACCOMMODATIONS.
Arrangements have been made with the Holiday Inn of Goleta for a special
conference room rate of $89 per night (plus loathsome taxes). Up to four people
may stay in a room at this price. To reserve a room at this rate, phone the
Holiday Inn of Goleta at (805) 964-6241 and ask for the UCSB History
Department/Shifting Frontiers rate. Holiday Inn has only been able to commit a
limited number of rooms at this price, so early reservations are adviseable.
For participants with cars, there are many alternative sites, both in Goleta and
Santa Barbara proper. Most offer a special rate for the University of
California, so be sure to ask for it.
The
Holiday Inn also provides a free shuttle bus that will pick up passengers at
either the Santa Barbara Airport or the Santa Barbara Airbus Goleta office. The
shuttle is only available between the hours of 6:30 am and 10:30 pm. If you
plan to make use of it, please plan to arrive at either the Santa Barbara
Airport or the Santa Barbara Airbus Goleta office during those hours. The phone
for the shuttle is the same as for the hotel: (805) 964-6241
Twice-daily
shuttle service between the Holiday Inn and the UCSB campus will be provided
free of charge to conference registrants.
Registrants
who have their own cars can park on campus for a fee or for free on the street
in Isla Vista, which is a short walk from the campus. NB: if you have a
University of California parking pass it is valid on all UC campuses and will
allow you to park at UCSB for free.
