Welcome to the Center of Excellence! In 2005, the National
Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Center on Minority Health
and Health Disparities (NCMHHD) awarded a $7.5 million grant to
the Institute for Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities at
the University of South Carolina and Claflin University to
establish a partnership to reduce and eliminate HIV/AIDS, HPV,
and cervical cancer.
Our Center of Excellence is designed to provide opportunities for
research, training and community outreach. We are training
future leaders in public health and health disparities research
at Claflin University and the University of South Carolina. We
are working closely with departments within both university
systems to design effective research projects for intervention
and the prevention of these diseases.
In an attempt to reduce the number of cases of HIV/AIDS, HPV,
and cervical cancer in minority and rural communities, we are
working in partnership with the community to design
community-led programs and other resources to educate and
promote awareness about these health conditions. We also rely on
expertise from the community to help guide our research
activities.
As director of the Center of Excellence, I view this partnership
between USC, Claflin, and the Orangeburg community as a major
achievement that will have a significant impact on the health of
minorities in rural communities. Please take time to review our
website and contact our faculty or staff, if you have any
questions or need further information about how to get involved
with our community outreach, training, or research activities.
Sincerely,
Saundra H. Glover, Ph.D., MBA
