Gamecocks secured competitive training spots during Phase I of match.

Match Day marks one of the most significant milestones in a pharmacist's professional development, as it represents the bridge between academic preparation and professional practice, transforming their years of study into career paths.

USC College of Pharmacy students seeking postgraduate training celebrated another strong showing in the first phase of Match Day 2025, as 39 students earned residency and fellowship positions across the country, while 22 alumni accepted postgraduate positions in areas such as cardiology, critical care, emergency medicine, internal medicine, oncology, pediatrics, solid organ transplant and the pharmaceutical industry. They will train at institutions across 17 states, while 13 Gamecock pharmacists will remain in South Carolina to provide care.

Brandon Bookstaver, 2004, is director of the college’s Residency and Fellowship Training program and leads the Pre-Residency track to help students prepare for Match Day. He co-authored Roadmap to Postgraduate Training, a blueprint for students and preceptors on preparing for residency and fellowship training.

“I am excited for these opportunities for our graduates. They have put a tremendous amount of time and effort into preparing for Match Day,” he says, “and I know the exposure to the variety of training opportunities has prepared them for the next steps in their careers.”

Phase II of the match program is set for April 23.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists administers the Resident Matching Program to provide opportunities for graduating pharmacy students to further their training by ‘matching’ with residency programs. Additionally, pharmacy students interested in postgraduate training can pursue executive residencies, fellowships or independent programs.
