ALD Trow The Trow Scholarship is an award for outstanding undergraduate members of Alpha Lambda Delta. The National Council offers at least 35 scholarships each year. Recipients receive $3,000 in their junior year. Consult USC ALD Chapter advisor for details.

AAUW offers international fellowships for women of countries other than the US, and the dissertation, professional degree, and postdoctoral fellowships for American women who have provided distinction or promise in their fields of scholarly work. Application deadlines range from November to December.

American Chemical Society Undergraduate Fellowships are available to African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and American students who demonstrate: high academic achievement in chemistry or science and evidence of financial need (according to FAFSA form). High school seniors, or college freshman, sophomores, and juniors who intend to, or are already, majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or a chemically-related science and planning a career in the chemical sciences or chemical technology are eligible.

AHLEF looks not only at GPA and financial need but also academics, hospitality work experience, extracurricular/professional activities, awards, and personal attributes. Association Scholarships
The American Psychology Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) and the American Psychological Association (APA) sponsor a number of scholarships that support students and researchers at the graduate, undergraduate, pre-doctoral, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels.

American Occupational
Therapy Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships are offered to occupational therapy students at the associate, baccalaureate, post-baccalaureate certificate, professional master's, post-professional master's and doctoral degree levels. Scholarships, ranging in value from $150 to $5,000, are available for occupational therapy students by applying to the American Occupational Therapy Foundation. All applicants must be U.S. Citizens, be members of the American Occupational Therapy Association, and be enrolled full-time if pursuing their first occupational therapy degree. Students in post-professional graduate programs may be part-time students.

American - Scandinavian
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships (up to $18,000) and grant (normally $3,000) to individuals to pursue research or study for a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education by the start of the project. Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related study or research.

AT&T Labs Fellowship This three year research focused award supports women and minority students pursuing Ph.D. studies in computer science, math, statistics, electrical engineering, operations research, systems engineering, industrial engineering, or related fields. Recipients work closely with a mentor and participate in a summer internship during the first summer.

The Blakemore Foundation The Blakemore Foundation was established to encourage the advanced study of Asian languages and to improve the understanding of Asian fine arts in the United States. Provides several different types of language grants to students with an undergraduate degree and an advanced command of the language.

These awards offered by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) supports outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate high levels of academic performance and strong motivation to internationalize their education by developing expertise in the languages, cultures, and world regions less commonly studied by Americans. Undergraduate applicants must be evaluated by a University committee.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan The US-Japan Bridging Foundation awards scholarships to US undergraduate students for one semester or academic year in Japan. The Foundation aims to expand the opportunities for study abroad in Japan to help prepare America's young people to assume future global leadership roles. for International Peace Fellowships
Each year the Endowment offers 8-10 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. Carnegie Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates. Students who have started graduate study are not eligible. Applicants must be nominated by the University in the fall semester.

Carpe Diem Foundation Scholarships The Carpe Diem Foundation Scholarship is open to undergraduate students who have completed no more than their junior year and have demonstrated outstanding achievement, exceptional leadership ability, and a serious commitment to community service. Priority among equally qualified applications will be given to students whose parents are employed in education, government, social services, public health, the administration of justice or the fine arts.

Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Funded by the Department of Energy, Office of Defense Programs and Office of Science, this fellowship is for undergraduate seniors or first or second year graduate students planning full-time study toward a Ph.D. in the physical, engineering, computer, mathematical, or life sciences.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarships For Latino students who have a history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who plan to continue contributing in the future may apply for these scholarships. Students with excellent leadership potential are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be US Citizens.

The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management is an alliance of fourteen schools of business in partnership with corporate America, working to facilitate the entry of minorities into managerial positions in business. The Consortium recruits college-trained African American, Hispanic American, and Native American United States citizens and invites them to compete for merit-based fellowships for graduate study leading to a Master's Degree in Business.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Graduate Arts Award This award for up to $50,000 enables students or recent alumni with exceptional artistic or creative promise and significant financial need to pursue up to three years of study at an accredited graduate institution in the US or abroad. Candidates must be evaluated by a USC committee for nomination in early January.

Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes are part of a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Scholarship recipients - U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D. students and recent graduates - receive funding to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners.

DAAD Grants DAAD grants (e.g. DAAD Study, DAAD RISE) are availble for study, research and/or internships in Germany for faculty and students in the United States. Scholars participate in a wide variety of academic activities to promote international academic relations and cooperation. German language skills necessary vary by competition (including several with no German required). Application deadlines vary.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is offering Graduate Fellowships for master's and doctoral level students in environmental fields of study.

The Erasmus Mundus Programme The Erasmus Mundus Programme is a cooperation and mobility programme in the field of higher education that aims to enhance the quality of European higher education and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with Third-Countries. Erasmus Mundus provides support to individual students, researchers and university staff who wish to spend a study/research/teaching period in the context of one of the above mentioned joint programmes or cooperation partnerships.

The Ertegun Programme annually provides fifteen full time graduate scholarships in the humanities of between one and three years of support, including tuition fees, college fees and a generous cost of living stipend, at Oxford University.

Diversity Fellowships
The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Approximately 60 predoctoral fellowships are awarded, providing three years of support for graduate study leading to a researched-based Ph.D. or Sc.D. in specified fields. All citizens or nationals of the United States regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation are eligible to apply. Applications are due in November.

Foster Scholarship Program The Foster Scholarship is open to those currently pursuing or intending to pursue a masters or doctoral level degree in oceanography, marine biology, or maritime archaeology, including the curation, preservation, and display of maritime artifacts.

Through the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship Program, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners supports the education of collegiate accounting and criminal justice students who may become Certified Fraud Examiners in the future.

Freeman-ASIA Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.


Fulbright Grants Fulbright Grants are available to graduating seniors and graduate students who present a clear program of study to be carried out in a particular academic setting abroad. The grant allows students to conduct research or advanced study, or undertake teaching assistantships, for one year in a foreign country. Candidates must be evaluated by a USC committee for nomination early in the fall semester.

Scholarship Program
Gates Cambridge Scholarship Program is an international competition open to every country in the world except for the United Kingdom. Candidates are expected to have evidence of continued academic excellence as well as references that are able to speak knowledgeably and clearly about the applicant's performance and potential. Applicant's may need to undertake a GRE exam, and must be admitted to Cambridge through the university's normal application procedures. Application materials are due near the end of October.

National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science
The GEM Fellowship programs are designed to offer opportunities for underrepresented minority students to obtain MS degrees in engineering and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences through a program of paid summer internships and graduate financial assistance.

for Study Abroad
Gilman Scholarships expand opportunities for study abroad for students whose demonstrated financial need might otherwise preclude them from such an experience. The program recruits a diversity of participants and encourages participation by students in a broad range of fields of study in a wide range of countries. Glamour Top Ten College Women Glamour's Top 10 College Women Awards spotlight college women from across the United States with an annual competition that recognizes leadership, involvement on campus and in the community, excellence in your field of study, and unique, inspiring goals. Each winner receives $2,000 cash prize, a trip to New York, opportunities to meet with top professionals in a variety of fields, and national recognition in the magazine.

Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award gives twelve $10,000 scholarships used for post-baccalaureate or professional study at accredited institutions of higher learning (does not have to be in the US or have a Golden Key chapter). Judging criteria include academic merit, campus/community/work commitments and significant involvement in local Golden Key chapter. Recipients must plan to enroll in graduate school in the fall of year received. Members do not have to be a U.S. citizen; member can apply up to five years after graduation; applicants may continue to re-apply as long as they are eligible, but previous recipients may not re-apply.

Sophomore and junior students pursuing a bachelor's degree in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering and intending to earn a graduate degree in these fields and pursue a career in research and/or college level teaching are eligible to apply. Application materials are available early in the fall semester. Students may not apply directly for the scholarship but must be nominated by the institution.

Government Accounting Scholarship The Greathouse Scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students preparing for a career in state and local government finance and the Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship recognizes outstanding performance by minority students in this field.

The Harvey Fellows Program The Harvey Fellows Program seeks to encourage Christian graduate students to integrate their faith and vocation and pursue leadership positions in strategic fields where Christians tend to be under-represented. The program provides financial support to Christian graduate students who possess a unique vision to impact society through their fields and are pursuing graduate studies at premier institutions (top five) in their disciplines in the United State or abroad. Fellowships are not awarded for study at theological schools or for non-degree or part-time graduate programs. Applications are due in late October.

The Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) Fellowship Program The IIPP Program provides underrepresented minority college students with summer policy institutes, a study abroad experience, intensive language training, internships, graduate study, and student services. Program begins the summer after sophomore year, and applications are due the spring semester of a student's sophomore year.

The Insurance Scholarship Foundation of America - NAIW Education Foundation scholarships are available to all students majoring or minoring in insurance, risk management, or actuarial science who are completing their sophomore year or higher and have successfully completed or are currently enrolled in two insurance, risk management, or actuarial science courses.

Knowles Science Teaching
Teaching fellows who have received a Bachelor's or advanced degree in science, engineering or mathematics who now want to teach high school science and/or mathematics. The Fellowship supports them professionally and financially for up to five years through a teacher preparation program to eligibility for tenure.

James Madison Fellowship These fellowships support the graduate study of American history by aspiring and experienced secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies. Fellowships fund up to $24,000 of each Fellow's course of study toward a master's degree. The program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution. Applications are due in February.

Marshall Scholarships A highly competitive scholarship, the Marshall provide for two years of study at a university in Great Britain. Candidates must have superior academic ability, a record of service and leadership and be will-informed on global issues. Candidates must be evaluated by a USC committee for nomination in early September.

EPA Marshall Scholarship Program To be eligible for the EPA Marshall Scholarship, applicants must first by selected as Marshall Scholars, applying in the usual way, and must be pursuing a graduate degree in one of the following areas: physical, life or systematic sciences; engineering and technology; economics; social and behavioral sciences; urban and regional planning; and communication sciences. The Marshall Commission will pay for the first two years of the Scholarship and the Scholar will spend this time in the UK, and the EPA will pay for up to three additional years of study, which can be spendt in the UK or the US, providing this research culminates in a doctoral degree.

George J. Mitchell Scholarships are for students interested in studying in Ireland. Mitchell Scholars are expected to have a record of academic excellence, leadership, and extracurricular interests as well as exhibit personal characteristics of honesty, integrity, and personal service to others. The Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology awards this scholarship to undergraduates majoring or minoring in Japanese or Asian Studies to further their study of language and culture. Graduate students wishing to conduct research at a Japanese university are also eligible for this scholarship which includes language study.

Funding Opportunities
for Graduate and Undergraduate Students
The South Carolina Space Grant Program supports undergraduate and graduate research opportunities in the space sciences and related fields with various programs. Each year, undergraduates and graduates have the opportunity to participate in research during the summer and/or throughout the year in ongoing projects sponsored by NASA. The different programs are listed below:

Graduate students must submit a research proposal for a NASA-related project to be conducted over a 12-month period.

SC Space Grant will award up to 10 undergraduate awards for either summer or academic year NASA-related research project for 10 weeks.

Program awards one fellowship every year to an exceptional undergraduate student.

SC Space Grant will award up to 5 students (graduate and undergraduate) $2,000 studying mathematics or science education.

Undergraduate Scholarship Program
Eligible undergraduates studying oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education that support NOAA's programs and mission are encouraged to apply in the spring semester. Scholarships are for the junior and senior years and include a 10 week paid summer internship.

National Federation for the Blind The National Federation of the Blind has the largest scholarship program for legally blind post-secondary students in the country. The Federation grants thirty scholarships annually to legally blind persons in higher education from college freshmen to doctoral candidates ranging in value from $3,000 to $12,000.

Association Foundation
This award supports pharmacy students who exhibit leadership (leadership qualities, demonstrated interest in pharmacy, involvement in extracurricular activities) and academic achievement.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship supports students pursuing careers (MD, DO, DDS, DMD, nurse practioner, certified nurse-midwife and physician assistant (in primary care). In return, students commit to serve in the Corps for two to four years in an underserved community upon their graduation and licensure.

National Italian American Foundation The National Italian American Foundation awards scholarships and grants to outstanding students who are either Italian American students or students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field.

National Student Nurses Association Scholarships The Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association offers scholarships for students pursuing degrees in nursing. Students can be either enrolled in state-approved nursing schools or in pre-nursing associate, baccalaureate, diploma, generic doctorate, and generic master's programs. Graduate study funds are available in the graduate degree is the first one sought in nursing. RN to BSN/MSN and LPN/LVN to RN students may also apply.

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. Disadvantaged background means that your financial aid office has certified you as having "exceptional financial need" (EFN), as defined by the Federal Government. Applications are due in late February.

The National Physical Science Consortium is offering graduate fellowships, open to all eligible students, with special consideration given to underrepresented minority groups and females physical science and engineering students.

Graduate Research
NSF awards are for study and research in the sciences or in engineering leading to master's or doctoral degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, behavioral and social sciences, and in the history and philosophy of sciences. Applicants must have a high GPA and high GRE scores in the General Test and the Subject Test in the field most closely related to their chosen area of graduate work or the area of their greatest or most relevant expertise. Students apply directly to NSF in early November.

Phi Beta Kappa Jensen Scholarship The Walter J. Jensen Fellowship is awarded for at least six months of study in France. Applicants must be a current member of Phi Beta Kappa and must have earned a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year institution. They must demonstrate superior competence in French, according to the standards established by the American Association of Teacher of French. Preference may be given to members of Phi Beta Kappa and educators at the secondary school level or above.

The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program provides undergraduate and graduate funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service.

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program The Rangel Program seeks to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers as diplomats in the for careers as diplomats in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. The Program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service as those with financial need. There are two major components to the Rangel Program: an International Affairs Graduate Fellowship Program that provides supports for graduate school, professional development, and entry into the U.S. Foreign Service, and an undergraduate International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program that provides undergraduates with the opportunity to enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding about U.S. foreign policy.

Roothbert Fund The Roothbert Fund was created to provide support to persons motivated by spiritual values (no emphasis on any particular form of religious practice or worship), and is given to a wide range of careers but preference is given to those considering a career in education. Please note The Roothbert Fund does not make grants except to applicants whose current or permanent address is located in one of the following states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, or North Carolina.

Rotary Foundation Rotary Foundation Global Grants fund scholarships with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of Rotary's six areas of focus: peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development. They support graduate level study during one academic year abroad and provide funding by a cash grant of $30,000 from which the applicant must provide for round-trip transportation, tuition and fees, room, board and language training (if necessary) and living expenses. Undergraduates may apply junior year or senior year. Applicants must apply through a local Rotary Club during the spring semester.

Rhodes Scholarships A highly prestigious and competitive scholarship, the Rhodes recognizes altruism and superior intellect. The scholarship provides for two years of study at Oxford in any field. Candidates must be 18-23 years old, have senior standing, superior academic ability, a history of service and leadership, be well-informed on global issues and proven physical vitality. Candidates must be evaluated by a USC committee for nomination in early September.

SMART (Science, Math, and
Research for Transformation) Scholarship
This scholarship, sponsored by the Department of Defense (DOD), provides an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM disciplines) to receive a full scholarship and increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DOD laboratories.

Scotland Saltire Scholarships Scotland Saltire Scholarships (SSS) is a substantial program of scholarships, offered on a matched funding basis between the Government and Scottish Higher Education Institutions. The scheme offers up to 200 awards, each worth 2000 British pounds. These are towards the tuition fees, for any one year of study, on an Undergraduate, Masters or PhD at any of Scotland's higher education institutions.

Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship Program The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship Program invites college graduates to apply for full-time, six-to-nine month Fellowships in Washington, DC. Outstanding individuals will be selected to work with nonprofit, public-interest organizations addressing peace and security issues. Thirty Fellowships are awarded annually for up to two years of graduate study in the United States. To be eligible you may be a resident alien, have been naturalized as a US Citizen, or are the children of two parents who are both naturalized citizens. A successful candidate will give evidence of at least two of the following three criteria for selection: (1) creativity, originality, and initiative, demonstration in any area of his/her life; (2) a commitment to and capacity for accomplishment, demonstrated through activity that has required drive and sustained effort; and (3) a commitment to the values expressed in the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The application and selection process will take place in the late fall and winter.

UK Summer Fulbright The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for US citizens to come to the UK. These summer programs provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (aged over 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the UK on a three, four, five or six week academic and cultural summer program.

Science Research Scholarships
The United Negro College Fund, Inc. and The Merck Institute For Science Education Research Laboratories have established scholarship awards for outstanding African American students pursuing studies and careers in the field of biomedical science, education, and research. Fifteen awards will be made to rising juniors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, African Americans, majoring in life or physical sciences interested in biomedical research (professional and engineering majors are not eligible). The Department of Energy (DOE) sponsors a variety of fellowships for students beginning or about to begin graduate study in the sciences at selected American universities. Fellowships are offered in the following field: applied health physics, civilian radioactive waste management, environmental restoration, fusion engineering, fusion science, health physics, industrial hygiene, and nuclear engineering. GRE scores are required for complete applications. Applications for each program are due in late January.

College Academic Award
Sixty awards given among First, Second, and Third Teams. The top 20 students are designated members of the First Team and will be featured in the newspaper and provided a $2500 cash award. The awards are open to full-time undergraduates of at least junior standing at four-year institutions. Students must be nominated by their schools. Criteria includes grades, academic rigor, leadership, activities and most important, the student's essay describing his or her most outstanding intellectual endeavor as a college undergraduate.

Whitaker International Fellows Program The Whitaker International Fellows Program awards year-long grants to students with a BS or MS in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, or a demonstrated commitment to the field of BME to study at an institution abroad within three years of their graduation. Demonstrated language ability for the proposed country of study and a nomination letter from the Biomedical Engineering Department are required. Application deadline is early February.

Wooddy Actuarial Scholarship The Wooddy Scholarship is awarded annually to college seniors who have successfully completed at least one actuarial examination, rank in the top quartile of their class and are nominated by a professor at their school. University nomination required. Applications are due in early April.
