About this Fellowship
Supports undergraduate students seeking to study a less-commonly taught language abroad in a non-English speaking country (outside of Western Europe).
Strong preference is given for programs of 6 months or longer; students may combine a summer with a semester abroad to reach this 6 month threshold.
Applicants must explain how their language and study relate to issues of National Security, broadly defined. Scholars are also required to fulfill a service requirement of one year of employment with a federal agency, following their graduation.
To participate in the campus evaluation process, please complete a preliminary application as soon as possible.
Please note: Students applying for the Boren must also complete the study abroad application process with the Education Abroad Office. See more information about the study abroad application process and their deadlines at the Education Abroad website.
Award Value
Up to $10,000 for a semester and up to $20,000 for a full academic year.
Special summer program for STEM students: up to $8,000 for a minimum 8-week program.
