About this Fellowship

Gilman-McCain provides $5,000 awards to dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

Sponsored by the US Department of State, the Gilman-McCain Scholarship enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including first-generation college students, STEM students, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, HBCU and community-college students, and students from states with less study abroad participation.

Applicants must be a dependent child of an active duty military member at the time of application, to include Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard, including active duty Reserve Forces, Air National Guard, and Army National Guard. Students must also receive any type of Title IV financial aid and be applying to or accepted for a credit-bearing study abroad, internship, or virtual international program of at least three weeks.

Students may apply for an additional $3,000 award for study of critical need languages and/or up to $1,000 to support STEM research abroad.

Please note: Students applying for the Gilman-McCain must also complete the study abroad application process with the Education Abroad Office. See more information about the study abroad application process and their deadlines at the Education Abroad website.
