Division of Information Technology

Kelly Retires as Chief Data Officer

On June 20, the Division of Information Technology will bid a fond farewell to Chief Data Officer, Dr. Mike Kelly, Ph.D., who was appointed to the strategic leadership role in 2014. During his tenure, USC’s data governance and stewardship practices became a standard bearer among colleges and universities in North America, while recent completion of CarolinaAnalytics provides the entire USC System with a modern, highly capable data lake, visualization, and analysis platform. CarolinaAnalytics came to fruition through collaboration among Enrollment Management units, OIRAA, Human Resources, Finance & Administration, the Provost Office, and eLearning Services.

Kelly credits the success of Analytics & Data Governance services to his hard-working crew. “My team, through its members past and present, is the proudest accomplishment of my tenure as Chief Data Officer. Their expertise and dedication transformed regard for data as a risk or liability into a practical tool and recognized asset for the betterment of the university.” Kelly notes that Data Stewardship Manager Sue Porter, who is also retiring effective July 5, elevated data stewardship principles and practices by directly supporting over 130 data subject matter experts across the university. The Division of IT congratulates Porter on 30 years of service to the University of South Carolina.

Kelly emphasizes that the investments and efforts that brought USC this far will need to be transformed to realize the full potential of data long into the future. Vice President for IT/CIO Brice Bible has named Caroline Maulana to serve as the Interim Chief Data Officer. Maulana led implementation of CarolinaAnalytics for the past five years, the most recent in a 20-year career in data across education, business, industry, and the US military. Maulana recently completed the Next Leaders Fellowship program and is enrolled in Carnegie Mellon University’s new Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer Certificate Program beginning this fall.

On behalf of the division, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Mike and Sue for their services.

Congratulations and Best Wishes
